In response to the shooting death of Mary Spears in Detroit.

I cant make this shit up. Men……..I swear they just don’t understand the fear of being a woman

hek23 “Ok I’m confused, women do you want a thug or not?”

HAHN?!!?!

It seems like a hideously shitty idea to give your number to someone who’d physically attack you for not giving it.

"Oh, a person that dangerous and unstable definitely won’t use my number to call me or find out where I live or stalk me or anything!"

Not sure if dude here is really dumb, talking about fake numbers, or just using potential violence as an excuse to try and convince people to give him numbers.

What they usually ignore is that giving fake numbers will put you at risk as well

Men have gotten smarter by calling that number right in front of you to make sure that is your number

Smh…

That calling the number right in front of me shit happened to me a couple times.

Thankfully, none of those dudes EVER called me again, but the fact that they would call the number with me standing there would fill me with dread and tell me immediately what kind of person he is.

Like, nigga, IF it’s a fake number, WHAT you gon DO to me?

I think they were just asking for my number for sport, cause they never actually called me again,

But I shudder to think about how many times this could have been me,

How it angers me that I have to ‘have a boyfriend’ because dudes will respect another man before they’ll respect ME and my right to not want they ass.

Actually Tashabilities… she told him that she had a boyfriend. And Thats when he killed her.

THE ACTUAL HELL MAN?! I can’t.

Every possible scenario when a man tries to kill a woman over her phone number, people will find a way to blame her for what he did:

  • You ignore him, so he attacks you. “Why couldn’t you just be polite? Why would you provoke someone who was obviously violent?”
  • You try to politely turn him down, so he attacks you. “Why couldn’t you just pretend to be interested? Why would you provoke someone who was obviously violent?”
  • You fake interest because you’re scared he’s going to hurt you. He thinks you’re serious and won’t leave you alone and then he attacks you when you finally try to shake him off politely with a totally reasonable excuse. “Why’d you lead him on? Why would you encourage someone who was obviously violent?”
  • You give him your phone number to get him to leave you alone. He starts calling you a lot, but you don’t answer, so he tracks you down, and then he attacks you. “Why did you give him your phone number? Why would you encourage someone who was obviously violent?”
  • You give him your fake phone number to get him to leave you alone. He realizes it’s not your real number, so he attacks you. “Why would you give him a fake phone number? Why would you provoke someone who was obviously violent?”
  • You give him your real phone number and you try to be nice when you call. Eventually he realizes you’re not actually interested and attacks you. “Why did you lead him on? Why would you encourage someone who was obviously violent?”
  • You give him your real phone number and end up being harassed into a relationship with someone who is obviously violent because you are scared for your life. He eventually tries to kill you anyhow for nebulous reasons that ultimately boil down to: he can’t completely control you the way he wants to because you are a person, not a doll. “Why do women date violent men? I don’t understand why they don’t just leave.”

I’ve heard all of these arguments in all of these situations. Men use harassment, coercion, and violence to try to get what they believe they are entitled to from women, and the woman gets blamed no matter what. Men are never expected to take responsibility for their bad behavior, because their sense of entitlement is never questioned by our misogynistic patriarchal society. In our warped society, it is reasonable for men to expect that women should be compliant, should be willing to give any man who wants them exclusive rights to her body, sex, affection, and love, and so it is reasonable for men to become violent when a woman acts in any way that denies men control over her person.

Therefore, when a man gets violent, the problem is not the man and his sense of entitlement, it is the woman, who didn’t do “what she was supposed to” even if there is absolutely nothing she could do, short of giving up her autonomy and personhood entirely. And men who get violent when women refuse to comply do so to remind them: if you won’t surrender your personhood willingly, we will take it from you by force.

This is about control, not a phone number.

Why all men are responsible for stopping this. ALL MEN

THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IN MEXICO

25 students where hurt and 43 disappeared in México because they where protesting on the streets. It is well known that the police was involved on the disappearances !!!!!!

Police isn’t killing people just in Ferguson, its also happening in Iguala, Guerrero, México! HELP US SO EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW THE FUCKING GOVERNMENT IS CORRUPT AND THE MOTHER FUCKING PRESIDENT ISN’T DOING SHIT AT ALL!!!! PAULINA PENA, THE PRESIDENT’S DAUGHTER, IS ON VACATION IN EUROPE USING ALL OF OUR FUCKING MONEY WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY!!!!!

For people in the US who may not take the term “disappeared” seriously.  Authorities have now accounted for all 43 victims burned in 10 mass graves according to La Jornada.  The story hasn’t really made headlines in the US despite the size of the protests.  You can read the story in WSJ and Aljazeera.  You can also read Leon Krauze in TNR calling out Peña Nieto for inaction and saying helpful things like “[Corruption in Mexico] is a cultural matter.”

If the subject isn’t drugs or immigration, the U.S. news can’t be bothered.

What I think of every time I see a “Sexy Pocahontas” or romanticized rendition of “Pocahontas and John Smith”.

Actually the true story is Matoaka was married to a Native guy, with whom she had a child. She was not 12, she was an older teenager, and John Smith did not rape her (actually all records indicate that he had a great relationship with her father, until about a decade after he got back to England and made the Disney story up). She was taken as a hostage to England, where she was imprisoned until John Rolfe coerced her into marriage. She had a child, and she died at the age of 22, of an STI. In private communications with her sister, she made it clear that she had been repeatedly raped while imprisoned in the colonies, including by the governor of Virginia.

So yes, sexual violence is what killed Pocahontas. But you’re not doing much justice to her when you casually replicate lies about her life for your own political message. If you wanna be real about her story, actually be real about it. Her spirit has survived hundreds of years of lies and people using it for their own gain, it’s time we share her story in her own words. There are plenty of oral histories from her people, who still survive and are starting to share those stories publicly (feel free to check the Pocahontas tag on my blog for a link to a well-written article featuring said oral histories).

Yeah, education bitch!

Ive been waiting to respond because there has been so many different responses on here. If there is any kind of consensus we can come to here, its the fact that there is various interpretations of what REALLY HAPPENED. The most frequent similarities drawn are the dynamic of conquest and violence that occurred.
For as much input thats been contributed with various claims of “FACTS” and validity there are still no answer that is the same. I agree that oral histories are valid and should be taken into account. Indigneous as well as other POC communities know how important and valid oral histories can be. When it comes to claiming im using this for my own “political message” I dont necessarily take that as something negative. Because if this post challenged around 15,000 people to stop and take a moment to think on the harmful implications of Native stereotypes then that is a positive for me, regardless of how that means my “political message” or motives are perceived. Regardless of my motives the amount of Missing and murdered indigenous women, as well as the statistics of Violence against Indigenous women remain disturbingly high. Its alot more thought than people might have put into it if they had never come across this.  In the end Im not claiming to know everything either. I grew up in Maryland, the only education I had of Native Americans consisted of the Disney version of Pocahontas, romanticised thanksgiving narratives and about Tecumseh and THATS IT. Anything else I learned about was through my own journey of self discovery, through my people, through my Indian Studies courses and wonderful platforms such as this. So to everyone who has taken the time to reblog and contribute, thank you. Critical thinking and discourse is something to be encouraged especially when we consider how our educational institutions are really failing to do so.  In the end I still stand with the intended message to think twice before using other cultures as a costume. Before dressing up as someone who acts as a symbol for Native’s in the colonial lens, think about what you are perpetuating.

WHOA WHOA WHOA.
excuse me.
But the minimum wage is set for teenagers with first jobs/ college students TO GET EXPERIENCE. Because a higher paying job isn’t going to higher you unless ypu have experience. AND YOU GET THAT EXPERIENCE BY WORKING AT MINIMUM PAYING JOBS. and the higher paying jobs are harder jobs which is why they get more money.
If you raise the minimum wage, then companies wont have the money to pay more employees so they look for the people with the most experience…
So if companies can only higher people with experience and you dont have any because companies DONT HAVE THE MONEY TO PAY YOU??
well then you are never going to get a job.
And when the minimum wage goes up, the price of everything goes up.
And then we have the minimum wage earners complaining again.
So stop saying that the minimum wage needs to be raised because it doesnt.
What needs to happen is we need a better economy and thanks to obama, thats not going to happen for a while because obama doesn’t know what hes doing.
So if you want to make more money, get experience and a better paying job.

You’re a shitty economist buddy.

Less than 15% of minimum wage worker’s are teenagers (age 14-19), the rest are adults aged 20 and over (85.7%). So lets stop pretending that these jobs are meant for students. The economy is shit and unfortunately, people have to settle for low wages because the alternative often is unemployment.

Higher paying jobs doesn’t equate to ‘harder jobs’. Often, the higher a position is, the less labor you are required to do.

"And when the minimum wage goes up, the price of everything goes up."

Inflation doesn’t necessarily work that way. Obviously, you’re just regurgitating the bullshit theories conservatives spew out while disregarding the statistics and history that proves otherwise. But since you’re using that argument, why not raise the minimum wage with the rise of inflation? Or productivity even?

If we had raised the minimum wage with the rise of productivity since 1968, it would currently be $21.72. In other words, we are creating far more and producing more profit for corporations, while being paid for a third of what we use to.

What do you have to say about that?

And raising the minimum wage to $10.10 will raise 1.7 million families out of poverty and reduce the need for them to use public assistance, saving the federal government $7.6 billion per year. Would you say you’re you against that?

The current federal minimum wage is $7.25. In none of the 50 states is that enough money to pay the average rent for a 2-bedroom apartment.

The minimum wage used to be able to keep a family of 3 above the poverty line. Now, the minimum wage can’t even keep a single parent working 40 hours a week, for an entire year without a single day off, above the poverty line.

When you raise the minimum wage, you’re putting more money into the pockets of the lower/working class. Their money is directly put back into the economy when the buy food, pay bills and generally spend their money. As oppose to higher paid people who have the luxury of saving their earnings. That means that businesses will generally make more money because the working class has more money to spend.

That’s my argument for raising the minimum wage, I would love to see your attempt to counter it.

This is honestly the best poster I have found in a while supporting breast cancer awareness. I am honestly so sick of seeing, “set the tatas free” and “save the boobies”. There is no reason in hell a life threatening, life ruining disease should be sexualized. “Don’t wear a bra day,” go fuck yourselves. You’re not saving a pair of tits, you’re saving the entire package: mind, body, and soul included. Women are not just a pair of breasts.
